Karen McGrath, CTE Coordinator, gave a presentation on the LCPS Work-Based Learning at the LCPS School Board Meeting on October 3, 2022. Work-based learning is coordinated at the school level and offers workplace experiences through partnerships with local businesses and organizations. McGrath outlined the Work-Based Learning Program at CHS and presented a Google site that she has created to be used as a resource by both students and local businesses who offer opportunities for our students. This Google site will be housed on the division website for easy access.
McGrath featured CHS students in her presentation who are participating in the program in various ways. Mrs. Alicia Hilliard, Culinary Arts Instructor, along with students Aloha Acors, Adelina Dimitri, and Stone Greer, spoke about the school-based enterprise that they have started. The enterprise is a coffee shop for CHS staff. It has been very successful. The students prepared a dish made of brie and pepper jelly in phyllo for school board members. Chefs typically send this dish out as a tasting to VIP tables as a welcome. This hors d'oeuvre is sometimes referred to as “amuse bouche,” which means “happy mouth.” Hailey Routt spoke about her internship with Salon Envie, where she learns about cosmetology, which is what she wishes to pursue upon completing high school . Madyson Willis also discussed the opportunities and experiences she has enjoyed through her internships with the Town of Kenbridge and the Lunenburg Chamber of Commerce.
Work-Based Learning helps to reinforce Virginia's 5C's: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and citizenship. These real-world, work-related opportunities help our students become more productive members of our society. McGrath strives to give each student a work-based learning opportunity during their time in the school system.

Today was opening day for the CHS Coffee Shop! This is a new school-based enterprise to provide coffee and biscotti to faculty and staff in the mornings a couple of days a week. Mrs. Hilliard's Culinary Arts students have developed and are operating this enterprise. #ChargerPride 💜💛

Today, two of Mr. Buchanan's Marketing Classes at CHS were introduced to a Service Learning Project with the Lunenburg Animal Shelter. Animal Control Officer Ray Elliott and CTE Coordinator Karen McGrath, presented students with data surrounding the number of animals taken in by the shelter in the past year. Elliott and McGrath challenged them to come up with ideas on how to decrease these numbers and directly affect the outcome for these animals. In the coming weeks students will visit the shelter and develop and implement a plan to tackle these issues in our county. Officer Elliott kept students on their toes, enforcing main points by asking questions and throwing candy to those who answered correctly. The intention of Service Learning Projects is for students to learn and apply academic, social, and personal skills to improve our community, continue individual growth, and develop a lifelong ethic of service. #ServiceLearning 💜💛

Central High and Lunenburg Middle School Athletic Director Wallace Owen recently expressed gratitude from the athletes of both schools to the staff of the Lunenburg Medical Center. The doctors, PAs, and nurses performed physical examinations for over 100 prospective athletes during the Spring and Summer of 2022.
Owen stated: "It is difficult to find a way to express our appreciation for the support the medical center has provided for our athletes and their families. Therefore, we proudly present the LMC Staff with an official Charger Athletic Letter with medallions representing all of our sports. These good people are definitely 'First Team' as far as we are concerned." The presentation was made at an informal ceremony on Tuesday, August 30th.

Just a reminder that if your child has special dietary requirements (food allergies, special food preparation, etc.), you must provide a note from your child's doctor to the school nurse. It needs to be on the doctor's letterhead or written from the doctor's prescription pad. A new note has to be provided every school year. Thank you!
