Information Regarding Homelessness & the McKinney-Vento Act

HOMELESS EDUCATION

Lunenburg County Public Schools provide educational service to children per the federal McKinney-Vento Act which guarantees school enrollment to any child who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence due to a lack of housing and lives:

  • In emergency or transitional shelters

  • In motels, hotels, campgrounds, awaiting foster care

  • In cars, parks, public places, bus or train stations, abandoned buildings

  • Double up with relatives or friends

  • Migratory children living in these conditions

Homeless children face multiple challenges and barriers to success in school. Lunenburg County Public Schools work to place homeless students in school immediately.

If you are or know of a homeless student, please contact Stacey Newton, Homeless Coordinator, at  (434) 696-3036.
